Over the weekend my homeboy Ozzie Gullien got himself into hot water for yet another profanity-laced tirade. This time White Sox fans, the media and the Cubs were his targets.
The jist of his tirade was that White Sox fans forgot about 2005, the media treats the Cubs like they are the best and treats the White Sox like horse bleep.
Well, Ozzie is right. I think a lot of White Sox fans probably have forgotten about 2005. A season like 2007 tends to have that effect. I still give Ozzie and GM Kenny Williams the benefit of the doubt in most cases, even though the 2008 lineup is slow as pond water.
The media does favor the Cubs over the White Sox and treats them like horse bleep. Always have, always will. If the White Sox win the World Series in 2008, the 2009 story will be if Fukudome can lead the Cubs to its first championship in 101 years. It is what it is, and Ozzie was calling it like he sees it.
And Ozzie is also right about Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. He won't get the respect despite his 7 championships with the Bulls and White Sox. In fact, if Mark Cuban buys the Cubs, you can guarantee which Chicago sports team owner will draw the most respect from fans and media. Again, it is what it is.
(Sidebar: if you really want to talk in terms of ownership in Chicago at this point, Reinsdorf tops the list, and Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz is looking like the best thing that could've ever happened to the Blackhawks, which is being the antithesis of his father).
So we can all get upset at Ozzie for the tirade, but don't get upset with him about the content. He called it like it is.
Now, let's get to why he started this tirade in the first place. The White Sox hadn't won in about a week, and he was asked when Jerry Owens would get called up from Triple A. A valid question, I think, but yet I don't think Jerry Owens is going to single-handedly turn anything around.
I think we need to take a step back for a second on the White Sox losing streak. There is reason to be concerned for the Sox hitting, but for the team as a whole, there is no reason to get worked up.
Why? It's the pitching, silly. Going into Monday night's game against the Blue Jays, the White Sox ERA had dropped 30 points year over year. The bats are cold, but the Sox are still dealing.
And as long as the Sox are still dealing, there's no reason to worry. The bats will come around, and if the pitching is there, the Sox will be there. And besides, when it comes to postseason baseball, it's all about the pitching anyway.
Keep the faith as long as the Sox keep pitching.

It's hard to forget 2005 after 2006 and 2007.
Hard to forget, yes.
Grace period over? Maybe.
