I was all set for the pennant race.
I downloaded the new MLB application for my iPhone to watch scores and highlights when I was away from the television. I've committed to myself to make the commitment to watch as many games down the stretch as possible.
Once I made my commitment, the White Sox decided to return the favor and hit the goddam skids.
Last week it was losing 3 out of 4 in Minnesota. Over the weekend it was losing 2 out of 3 to Kansas City.
As I write this the Sox are getting hammered 5-1 by the Tigers in the 4th inning. Assholes. Now I'm trying to decide if watching Oprah's The Color Purple with my wife is a better option.
Ozzie Guillen said it best about the White Sox pitching staff after he got tossed from Sunday's massacre in Kansas City:
"They stink."That's kinda what I'm thinking, Ozzie.
Maybe I ought to suspend myself for two games for my involvement in the Sunday's bench clearing brawl against the Royals. After all, I did watch the first four innings before I surrendered the television remote to my wife (the TV was turned immediately to House Hunters).
My thoughts exactly.
So now I'm trying to figure out what to do with my nifty MLB iPhone application. I don't need to be reminded about how much the White Sox suck, or for that matter, how little the Twins will actually lose between now and October (mark my words: Twins will lose less than 10 games the rest of the year, and get swept in the first round of the playoffs).
Lord knows I don't need to be reminded on how wonderful the Cuddly Cubbie Bears are. I've got the Indianapolis media and ESPN for that.
God I need football. Now.

I'm sorry to hear about your team. But maybe you'd feel better knowing that my team is doing okay. Maybe you've heard of them? A little team called the Cubs.
You sound so dejected. Cheer up! Not all hope is lost for the White Sox. If it's any consolation, as far as Chicago baseball teams go, your interesting blog entries have kept me from becoming the kind of Cubs fan that my boyfriend would like me to become someday.
Melanie ... knowing that I have kept you from becoming the kind of Cubs fan your boyfriend wants you to be totally made my day! In fact, I feel somehow like this blog has served its ultimate purpose. :)
So are you a Cubs fan, but just not at a high level? Or a Sox fan? Or undecided? If undecided, you know how to answer the question!
Jason ... ....... ah, nevermind. I have nothing to say to that.
Bryan, I don’t consider myself a Cubs or a White Sox fan mainly because I didn’t grow up around the Chicago area, nor do I live there now. However, until I started reading your blog last year, I didn’t know about the differences between Cubs fans and White Sox fans and the apparent cultural differences between the north and south sides of Chicago. I find the theory fascinating, and if I had to choose between the two teams, I would choose the White Sox. But my boyfriend is such a die-hard Cubs fan, I would never tell him my feelings about the White Sox because he would be miserably heartbroken! I would like to see the White Sox play the Cubs in the World Series, though. What are the odds of that happening?
Melanie ... mixed relationships can work. One of my co-workers at the Motor Mill is from Da Region in NW Indiana; his wife is from the north side of Chicago. He cheers for the White Sox, and his wife cheers for the Cubs ... and they get along just fine as long as they don't talk baseball! The key is to pick the team with the upper hand ... and no matter what's happening now, you've got the upper hand because the White Sox HAVE won a World Series championship in our lifetime, and unlike the Cubs last championship, we have moving pictures to prove it.
You do need to be sensitive to your man's feelings though ... after all, he is a Cubs fan. :)
As far as the theory regarding the culture, some contest it ... and I think there are exceptions to the rule. By and large I think the cultural differences are very true, however. And think of this: Barack Obama may look and behave as an elitist, but if you listen to his rhetoric on economic policy, he is very much a South Sider at heart.
I think it's possible the two teams could meet in the World Series. It's more likely the Cubs will make it because the NL is weak. The White Sox have to get by the Devil Rays and Angels. My prediction is that the Angels will win it all, but I'm hoping for an '05 repeat!
I wouldn't want the crosstown World Series to happen, though. In the USA Today on Monday Jerry Reinsdorf called it ... he said "if our fans had the choice to go to the World Series and lose to the Cubs, or not go at all, they'd chose the latter". He hit the nail right on the head! I'd rather Cubs fans not have that pleasure.
