Done what, you asked? Today I tried to sort out scenarios in which the Colts could win the AFC South division title.
It's been a given over the last few years. The question was "when?" the Colts would clinch, not "if?" and "how?".
The feat looks possible, but not probable. The Titans currently hold the first two division tie-breakers, which are division record and records against common opponents, respectively. The Colts currently have two division losses; the Titans have none. The Titans have a three-game lead in the common opponents category because the Colts lost to the Packers, Bears and Jaguars.
If the Titans were to lose three more games, it would still win the division.
Given that, there is only one way in which the Colts can win the division: the Titans lose four of the next five games and the Colts win out.
It's a long shot for sure, but it's highly improbable. The economy has a better chance of posting a 3% increase in GDP in Q4 of 2008 than the Titans losing four out of the next five games.
In terms of the Colts making the playoffs, the math is simple: win out and get in.
Right now it looks like you can take the "win out, get in" scenario to the bank ... and not need a bailout.
Wild card, here we come.
