Will the United States regain a presence in Formula One?

A Formula One website that I visit daily, http://www.f1-live.co.uk, ran a short story on a website that has recently appeared on the World Wide Web.

http://www.usf1.com

Apparently USF1.com is the future website of a United States-based Formula One team backed by SPEED television correspondent Peter Windsor and American Ken Anderson. This team will supposedly be based in Charlotte (rather than the UK) and feature American technology and drivers.

This is great news for F1 fans in the United States.

But this is better news for F1. Regardless of what Bernie Ecclestone or any F1 management type might say, F1's presence in America is important to the long term viability of the sport. Access to the viewership alone makes it appealing to advertisers. But more than that, a potential US-based F1 team with American drivers opens the door for new potential F1 sponsors that rely more on business in North America than any other global locale. Think of all the NASCAR and IndyCar sponsors that primarily operate in the States but may also have a global presence. This team opens the door to global advertisement for those sponsors. It then becomes a win-win scenario. F1 finds new sources of revenue, and US-based companies find new ways to reach a global audience.

Now take it a step further. An American team in F1 for the 2010 season should put pressure on Ecclestone and Indianapolis Motor Speedway boss Tony George to reinstitute the United States Grand Prix for the 2010 season. The business case may not exist now given than there are no American drivers and American companies have little interest in sponsorship, but for the reasons listed above, the USF1 team changes the entire dynamic of the situation. All of a sudden the USGP becomes feasible with the interest it would generate from sponsors.

If the USF1 team wants to do it right -- right meaning making a move that captures interest quickly -- it will lure two of the five best NASCAR drivers on the circuit. It doesn't matter who of the top 5 they grab, because any of these drivers will have enough cache with American racing fans to generate a lot of buzz and interest. Who cares if they're not the best in the world? That's not so much the point now. This team needs a following more than it needs a driver that cut his teeth in Europe.

If done right, this could be the answer to F1 popularity in the US. I can't wait!

Initially I thought this one was completely fake, especially as Peter Windsor denied being involved. However, the more I wait, the more plausible this team appears to be. Hopefully they can defy the odds and make it onto the grid in decent fighting condition. Face it, F1 needs all the help it can get team-wise.

This looks for real. Ken Anderson made a statement this week that confirmed all the rumors.

The good news is that Anderson and Windsor both have experience. That will help get the team off and running.

I just hope they think through this project. It'll be easy for them to find young American drivers who are coming up through the European ranks, but they won't win over the masses in the US until they get a household name to crossover. If they can get a popular driver, they will bring untold value to F1 and the US. American loves drivers that come through the ranks here ... not Europe. My guess is that 1 out of 10 race fans had heard of Scott Speed before last Sunday when he attempted to qualify for the Daytona 500.

The trouble USF1 faces is that before it can win over fans, it has to win over sponsors. It may well have its hand forced by the nature of the sponsors... ...in which case I hope there are some sponsors interested in one experienced (in F1) driver and one promising one that's been through the European system. That should get it the best start in life and enough time to consider when would be the right time to take on an American.

Granted, it's in a different situation to Force India. Vijay Mallya has said several times that he wants an Indian driver, but he's struggling to find any ready for F1. The USA has maybe a couple of dozen that could do it with a year or two in GP2 or F2. Not because they're not good enough yet, but because American and European styles of racing are quite different to one another.

When an American driver joins F1, whether it's for USF1 or someone else, that driver will need a running start. Sebastien Bourdais has been good enough for F1 for the last six years but switching racing styles delayed his acclimatisation by several crucial races.

Picking someone who gained a name in America before crossing the Atlantic would, as you say, be great to help Americans feel attached to the fate of driver, team and series alike. But a little preparation in Europe as well as success Stateside would make an American driver's shelf life in F1 that much longer and thus improve the effect. Assuming that Franz Tost does not join the team*...

* - Yes I still blame him for Scott Speed's premature exit from F1.

I agree with you in concept that a driver should have experience in Europe to compete in Formula One.

I think USF1 presents an exception. Because of the concept that it's a US-based team seeking US-based sponsors, it would be best to attract a name that will create a lot of buzz fast. The kind of sponsors USF1 will want to attract will be more interested in a "name" than European experience. Today in the presser Peter Windsor threw out some interesting names ... Kyle Busch ... Marco Andretti ... Dania Patrick ... and then brought up a few of the young Americans in Europe.

I think what will happen is you'll see a mix -- an established US driver from NASCAR or the IRL, and one of the up-and-comers in Europe.

A little off topic, Guys... I have a question. Last week I played around this site:
Rivalspot.com - Play Ps3 tournaments for cash
They say you can play online Football game tournaments on any console for cash... had anyone tried that before? Looks like a cool idea...
Are there any other sites where you can play sports games for real moneys? I Googled and found only Bringit.com and Worldgaming.com but it looks these guys don't specialize in sport gamez. Any suggestions?
